Abstract

461,816. Magnetic separators. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD), Ltd., J., and BOWER, W. L. Aug. 27, 1935, No. 23959. [Class 72] In a magnetic separator, annular permanent magnets 3 of high coercive force are mounted between rings 4 of high permeability material and the whole secured in position between end plates 3 which are secured upon a shaft 1 the whole forming a separator drum over which passes an endless belt carrying the material to be treated. The gap between the inturned ends of the plates 4 is filled with a low-melting non-magnetic alloy 5 and alternate rings 4 are provided with outwardly directed flanges which form spigots engaging with adjacent rings 4. In another form in which the separator proper is fixed and mounted within a rotating drum, the magnets and rings are of annular segmental form but the rings are not inturned and the space between the ends of the rings is not filled in with metal 5. In a third form, Fig. 6, the magnets 13 are supported as shown between the plates 14, each plate being formed with three radial projections provided at its outer end with projections parallel to the axis of the drum. The projections on the two outermost plates are of L-form and those of the intervening plates of T-form. The separator proper is fixed and mounted inside a rotating drum 11. The magnets are preferably made of a nickel-aluminium iron alloy.
