L., (partly) ; Abadan, Persia) Nov. 11, 1933, No. 31513. [Class 69 (iii)] [See also Group. XXI] Fires, and particularly oil fires, are extinguished by a blanket of fog or mist produced by causing wide and shallow streams of water or other liquid under pressure to converge and impinge on one another. A nozzle for the purpose comprises walls a, b, e, f, of the shape shown and a circular plate g rotatably mounted between the convergent walls f. The latter co-operate at their curved forward edges with the angular edge of the plate g to form wide and shallow orifices j, j<1> through which sheets of water are discharged to impinge a short distance in front of the nozzle. The plate g, which is rotatable by a handle m, is formed in segments g<1>-g<3> of varying thickness to allow a control of the sheets of water, and one segment g<4> is cut away to facilitate the removal of obstructions from the nozzle. In modifications, the plate g may be polygonal and the front edges of the walls f straight or the plate g may be fixed and the convergence of the walls f made adjustable, as by hinged portions; or the plate g may be dispensed with and a plurality of passages provided in the nozzle itself.
