Abstract

427,363. Change-speed gearing; claw clutches. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., and GRINHAM, E. G., Canley, Coventry. March 28, 1934, No. 9623. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to change-speed gearing with synchronized clutches in which a pin such as 32, Fig. 3, in a cross slot 30, 31 thrusts an auxiliary friction clutch 27 momentarily into engagement to synchronize. An additional or auxiliary member 21, Fig. 1, is provided which is splined at 20 on a shaft 19 and supports both the friction clutch member 27 and the claw member 12. The claw member 12 is splined at 14, Fig. 2, on the auxiliary member 21 and carries the pin 32 which may be formed, as shown in Fig. 3, by cutting away unnecessary splines and parts of splines and leaving two part splines. The friction clutch member 27 is adapted for a limited turning without axial sliding relatively to the member 21. In the double-synchronized clutch arrangement shown, the two friction clutch parts 27 are rigidly connected by a bridge-piece 28, Fig. 2, which passes through a wider opening 23 in the member 21 and carries the cruciform slot 30, 31, Fig. 3, engaged by the pin 32. A spring ball 33, Fig. 1, normally holds the parts in neutral. When the claw sleeve 12 is moved, say, to the left of Fig. 1 by a fork engaging a groove 13, the pin 32 in the cross slot 31 carries the friction members 27 and auxiliary member 21 to the left until there is frictional engagement with a friction cone 25 on the coacting claw member 15. This frictional engagement is effecting synchronization of the claws 12, 15 while the pin 32 is slipping into the axial slot 30. As the pin 32 slips along the slot 30, the claw sleeve 12 is sliding into full engagement with the claws 15.
