Abstract

426,445. Lubricating journal bearings. RIEBE, A., 14, Wendenstrasse, Schm÷ckwitz, and RIEBE - CARO - GLEITLAGER GES., 10A, Kopenickerstrasse, both in Berlin. April 3, 1934, Nos. 10131 and 10132. Convention dates, March 31, 1933 and July 13, 1933. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii)] Short length journal bearings of approximately the same dimensions as ball-bearings, having surfaces c, c<1>, Fig. 3, to take up axial pressure, are provided with oil recesses d, e of which the walls merge in both directions of rotation at small angle, preferably not more than 20‹, with the journal surface of the bearing, these recesses being fed by wicks or other oil feeding devices. These recesses are formed in a bushing a surrounded by an annular member b which provides an oil space whence oil is led by bores containing wicks to the bearing. The recesses may open respectively at opposite ends of the bushing, in which case they communicate with tapering recesses q in the end thrust surfaces, or they may both terminate short of the ends of the bushing, in which case they are lozenge-shaped Fig. 10. In a modification, the annular member has an annular channel open on its inside which is fed with oil by a bore from a pump or by gravity from an elevated reservoir. A pressure ring and an oil-throttling ring not under axial pressure are arranged on the shaft at opposite ends of the bushing. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which oil is thrown into closed bores i in the annular member b by a screw or worm device on the shaft dipping into the oil sump. The bores i lead to the annular chamber g and thence by other bores to the recesses e. Wicks n arranged in pairs at least one of which dips into the sump, supply lubricant when the shaft starts to rotate. Oil has easy access to these wicks by means of cross passages m. In the slightly modified form, Fig. 10, the outer ends m of each pair of wicks are bent over into axially arranged bores.
