Abstract
770,502. Lubricating. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. April 26, 1955 [March 11, 1955], No. 11979/55. Class 12 (3). In a track type tractor in which a hollow rotatable spindle is supported about a fixed shaft by bearings adjacent its inner and outer ends, a chamber beyond the outer end of the spindle includes a further bearing and lubricant is pumped to this chamber to immerse the bearing, the lubricant overflowing towards the other bearings through an aperture provided in an upper portion of a wall of the chamber. In the construction shown, the final drive housing 20 which is connected rigidly to the tractor transmission case 16 is apertured to support one end of a short shaft 23 carrying a pinion 24, the other end of the shaft being non-rotatably fixed to a clutch member (not shown) associated with the tractor power train. A shaft 15 secured to the transmission case 16 is surrounded by a quill 31 which at one end is supported by a bearing 32 and at the other end is supported by tapered roller bearings 43, 45, the bearing 45 being carried by a holder 38 secured to the shaft 15. The holder also supports a tapered roller bearing 50 supporting an end cap 48. A gear type pump 60 forces lubricant from a reservoir through a pipe 65 and a check valve 67 to a chamber 70 containing a filter 71. The lubricant from the filter passes in part through a pipe 81 to the gears of the drive of the drive mechanism and in part through a pipe 80 and an axial bore 82 on the shaft 15 into a chamber 83 to immerse the bearing 50. Lubricant overflows from the chamber 83 through an aperture 85 and is directed to bearings 43, 45 and also around the shaft 15 through orifices 86A back to the reservoir. Specification 747,296 is referred to.
