Abstract
425,003. Forging pipe couplings, nuts, &c. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Pittsburgh Pipe & Coupling Co. ; Allison Park, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Aug. 22, 1934, No. 24255. [Class 83 (iv)] In the production of blanks for pipe couplings, nuts, &c. a single operation of the apparatus takes bar stock, upsets the end in a die by means of a sleeve co-operating with a punch sliding therein, and, by a movement of the punch through the upset blank, forms the cavity and pushes the stock rearwardly to shear the blank. As shown, the rod 22 to be operated on is held by grippers 24 during the forging operation, and semicircular dies 20, 21, of which one is fixed, co-operate with an upsetting sleeve 31 through which slides a punch 32. The punch and sleeve reciprocate together closing the cavity, and the continued movement of the punch removes the core of the blank, the grippers being rendered inactive so that the stock is pushed rearwardly.
