424,063. Gilled tubes for heatexchangers. ELLIS, R. E., 70, Chancery Lane, London.-(Metropolitan Engineering Co.; 1250, Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 14, 1933, No. 22679. [Class 64 (iii)] [See also Group XII] In a heat-conducting tube 1 having metallic projections welded thereon, the projections consist mainly of flat fin-like surfaces and are each united to the tube by an electric resistance weld of small area to avoid any strain being set up in the tube during the welding operation. A boiler wall may be made up of tubes 1 depending from a header 6 with their fins 2 extending substantially across the spaces between the tubes, and having sufficient clearance space to allow them to expand freely under heat. The wall backing the tubes comprises refractory blocks 3, nonconducting tiles 4, and an outer metal shell 5. The projections may be composed entirely of flat fins, or of short cylindrical bases integral with flat fin surfaces as shown in Fig. 10. In a modification of the latter construction, the projections are rotated on their axes through a right angle. British Specifications 225,810, [Class 123 (ii)], and 386,916, and U.S.A. Specification 1,844,407 are referred to.
