Abstract

In the annealing of a centrifugally cast iron pipe, the pipe is heated to a temperature of 1650-1725 DEG F., to initiate but not complete the decomposition of iron carbide, the temperature then being reduced to 1450-1350 DEG F., at a sufficiently rapid rate to retard materially the solution of the phosphorus, and the pipe is maintained at that temperature until the combined carbon contact is reduced to 0,15 per cent, and finally cooled. The temperature of the pipe is raised to 1650-1725 DEG F., in a period not exceeding 40 minutes, and maintained at that temperature for a period not exceeding 15 minutes. The temperature of the pipe is then decreased to 1450-1350 DEG F., in a period not exceeding 24 minutes and then maintained at that temperature for a period not exceeding 16 minutes. The iron used has the following composition:-3,00-3,85 per cent of carbon, 1,2-3 per cent of silicon, 0,05-0,15 per cent of sulphur, 0,2-0,8 per cent of manganese and 0,2-2 per cent of phosphorus.
