Abstract

423,214. Electric signalling systems. HOLLANDS, W. M., Hill Cottage, Portsmouth Road, Esher, Surrey. May 3, 1934, No. 36462/33. [Classes 40 (i) and 118 (ii)] At the front opening of the casing of the final indicator of an electric indicator is provided a grid of horizontally-disposed spacedapart strips to restrict entry of light, the indicator comprising two lamps adapted to illuminate stencils visible through the front opening, one stencil being visible through an inclined sheet of glass and the other being visible by reflection from the glass. The invention is described as applied to a road traffic control sign in which the words " stop " and " go " are made visible through the opening and in which red, amber and green lights are also provided. As shown the casing 4, provided with the strips 14 to prevent light from entering the casing, carries two lamps 6 and 8 and a sheet of transparent reflecting material 7, which is inclined so that light from lamp 6 shines through the sheet to the opening 5, whilst that from lamp 8 is reflected by the sheet towards the opening. Glass panels 11 and 13 carry the words " stop " and " go respectively, so that when the lamps 6 and 8 are lit the words are visible through the opening. Windows 16, coloured red, amber and green, are also provided, the windows being illuminated by lamps 17, 18 and 19 respectively, and the wiring being arranged so that the red signal and the word " stop " are visible together as are the green signal and the word "go." Neither sign is illuminated when the lamp 18, behind the amber windows is alight.
