Abstract

422,525. Bottling. AUZLENE, Ltd., and BORTHWICK, W., 18, Chenies Street, Tottenham Court Road, London. April 25, 1934, No. 12496. [Class 125 (ii)] In a multiple-head suction-operated bottlefilling machine, each filling station is independent and self-adjusting as to bottle height and each filling-head is independently operable and provided with a separate supply line having a non-return valve interposed between the head and its connection to the main source of supply. As shown, each station comprises a spring- supported bottle rest 2, Fig. 1, which is selfadjusting as to the height of the bottle being filled and a filling-head 5 communicating by a flexible pipe 10 with the main supply pipe 6 connected by a pipe 7 with the main supply tank 8 ; a non-return valve 9 is provided in the pipe 10 and the pipe 7 may also be provided with a non-return valve. Each head 5 comprises two parts 18, 19, Fig. 3, mounted on the frame 4, the part 18 carrying a removable and interchangeable filling tube 23 and having a downward projecting branch 21 connected to the filling pipe 10 ; the part 19 carries a removable and interchangeable tube 29 surrounding the tube 23 and is connected by a branch 27 with a pipe 13 to an interceptor chamber 11 connected to the tank 8 by a pipe 17 having a non-return valve 16. The interceptor chamber is connected by a three-way cock 14 and pipe 15 with a source of suction and when the tubes 29, 23 are inserted into a bottle on the seat 2 the neck of the bottle engages a washer 32 on a collar 31 adjustably fixed on the tube 29 and forms a seal so that the bottle is partly exhausted of air by suction through the interceptor chamber, pipe 13, and tube 29 and filling material-liquid or powder-is drawn into the bottle from the tank 8 by way of the pipes 7, 6, 10 and tube 23 ; when the material in the bottle reaches the bottom of the tube 29 filling ceases and any further material passes to the interceptor chamber. The provision of the valve 9 ensures the pipes 6, 10 being always full of material for instantaneous filling to be effected and permits any head 5 to be used independently of any other head and put into use or a bottle removed therefrom while bottles are being filled at the remaining heads. The part 18 of the filling head has an opening closed by a plug 25 which may be removed for changing the tube 23 and the plug may be fitted with an adjustable valve to control the supply of material and, with the inclination of the branch 21, to prevent dribbling ; plugs are arranged at the end of all the pipes to permit easy cleaning thereof. The rest 2 may be recessed to accommodate bottles of irregular shape and the filling tubes may be provided with a slidable chuck member to engage the bottle neck; the chuck members may be made interchangeable to accommodate different types of bottle neck.
