Bottling.-In a machine for filling bottles &c. with aerated water &c. and provided with means for delivering a determined quantity of syrup through a. valve to a series of troughs and thence through pipes to the receptacles, each pipe is surrounded by a reciprocating telescopic tube member which is moved positively outwards relative to the pipe to form an extension thereof for introduction into the receptacle during filling and is moved inwards clear of the receptacle when it moves to a further position. Measured quantities of syrup are delivered to troughs 33, from which depend outlet tubes 34 each surrounded by a telescopic tube 36 connected to a cross-head 39, which slides on a hollow guide 38 and carries, by a pin-and-slot connection, a centring-cap 37 through which the tube 36 projects. Movement of the cross-head 39 is controlled by a link 42, which connects it to a bellcrank lever pivoted at 46 to a rotating frame and provided with a roller 44 running on a cam-track 45. When the cross-head descends, movement of the cap 37 is stopped by the bottle, but the tube 36 continues to descend into the mouth of the bottle. Syrup is delivered by a valve 32 operated by a star-wheel 50 controlled by a wheel 51 at the top of a rod 52 slidably mounted in the guide 38. If no bottle is.in situ, the cross-head 39 descends below its usual position and strikes pins 53 on the rod 52, which pins project through slots in the guide 38, and so lowers the wheel 51 and prevents it from striking the star-wheel 50, a spring 55 subsequently returning it to its normal position.
