[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 23, 1940. ] [Class 135] [Also in Group XVII] A machine for filling containers with carbonated beverages or with other liquids has " counter-pressure " provided from open-bottom containers 47, 42, 38, Fig. 1, partially immersed in water in a container 2, this pressure being applied at the lower end of the filling tube in the bottle &c. to be filled by introducing it through a filling head shown in Fig. 2 so as to tend to counterbalance the pressure of the incoming liquid. The counter-pressure is introduced at a threaded stem 25 and passes down a slidable tube 21 which, when the bell 30 is pressed upwards by the bottle mouth, leads the counter-pressure air or gas in and around the outside of filling tube 7. Also this counter-pressure reaches the upper side 11 of a diaphragm 10 through which a filling-valve 8 is kept open until removal of the filled bottle releases this pressure and closes valve 8. The connecting at various appropriate times of the " counter-pressure " containers 47, 42, 38 to the filler head thus establishes various filling pressures namely the pressure at which the liquid is delivered from its supply container less the counter-pressure. The height of container 47 is adjustable. Containers 1, 2 and the head 33 rotate together by virtue of being mounted on the same rotating platform. Chambers 47, 42, 38 are fixed, being carried on a fixed sleeve 89, Fig. 3, so that relative movement between valves 85 and 70 and the head 33 is secured. Air is supplied to the chambers through tube 46 ; it leaves cylinder 47 through a tube 59 and valve 70 which consists of a tube 73 spring-pressed against the underjaw of head 33. Thus, the filling-head 3 is connected by pipes 36 first to cylinder 47 through valve 70, then to cylinder 38 directly through passages 35, then to cylinder 42 through valve 85. The counter-pressures are measured by the heights C, B, A<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, which are the heights on the columns of water these pressures will support. The filling head proper is measured similarly by the height from the lower end of the filling tube, i.e. valve 8, to the free level A' in tank 1.
