Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A filling nozzle in a bottling machine, which comprises a generally frusto-conical spreader 26 surrounding an air vent tube 14 so that liquid flowing down a liquid supply pipe 16 is spread radially outwards against the wall of a bottle &c. into which a valve 15 has been introduced, has vent ports 25, 28 to equalize the gas pressure above and below the liquid envelope. Raising a bottle &e. through a guide 29 against a seal 23 slides upwards a sleeve 19 and an integral tube 18, away from a valve washer 20, to allow liquid to flow down the pipe 16. As the tube 18 rises, first the lower vent port 28 communicating with the vent tube 14 is uncovered; then the spreader 26; and then the upper vent port 28, above the spreader. The upper vent port 28 passes radially through a tapered projection (27), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the vent tube 14, extending out to the inner surface of the liquid supply pipe 16. Radial fins (38), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), on the vent tube 14, centre the latter within the liquid supply pipe 16. A number of the filling nozzles are described as arranged around the lower periphery of the tank (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), of a rotary table suction bottle filling machine in which the liquid level (4) is maintained constant by a float (5), and tubes 9 on top of the vent tubes 14 extend above the level of the liquid into the suction space. Alternatively, the filling nozzles can be used in gravity feed apparatus. In this form, a separate device is provided for removing surplus liquid from the pipe 16 &c. as the filled bottle is withdrawn. In the form shown, the tube 18 and the sleeve 19 are made of plastics. In a modification, the tube (18), Fig. 6 (not shown), and the sleeve (19) are made of stainless steel and are fitted with an internal sleeve (39) of P.T.F.E.
