Abstract

422,437. Heating feedwater; valves. L'AUXILIAIRE DES CHEMINS DE FER ET DE L'INDUSTRIE, 10, Avenue George V, Paris. Dec. 11, 1933, Nos. 34791 and 34792. Convention dates, Dec. 28, 1932 and March 25, 1933. [Class 135] [See also Group XIII] The water level in a direct-contact feed heater 1 or other vessel supplied with water by a continuously operated pump F, Fig. 1, is regulated by a balanced slide valve 12 in a closed casing to which the pump supply pipe 6, the delivery pipe 6a and a return pipe 13 are connected, the the valve member being actuated upon a rise in water level to close the delivery port and simultaneously open the return port. A tubular floatoperated sliding valve member 12, Fig. 2, controls the supply of water through a port 19 and annular chamber 17 to the delivery pipe 6<a> and the return of water through a port 21 and annular chamber 18 to the return pipe 13. To prevent steam and air from the heater entering the pump suction, the arm 34 of the valve spindle and the arm 37 of the float in the heater are connected to the ends of a grooved shaft 35, extending through a sleeve 39, Fig. 3. A groove 41 in the sleeve communicates through holes with a chamber 42 drained by a pipe 44. When the pump is stopped, the valve casing is drained through a pipe 55. The float consists of cork discs threaded on a hollow spindle and surrounded by a thin copper shell. The cork discs are spaced apart by thin circular plates. The float may consist of a cylinder divided by partitions into a number of fluid-tight compartments. In a modification, the valve, which is placed below the tank, is actuated by the head of water in the tank, the top of the valve casing being connected to the tank by a pipe extending above the highest water level, and the bottom by a pipe extending to the normal water level.
