[Class 23] A centrifuge for purifying paper pulp and the like has one or more barrels 1 with flanges 5, 6, at its ends to retain the separated heavy impurities, and has a plate 7 which is located outside the flange 5 and acts as a dam to ensure a sufficient depth of liquid material in the barrel to permit the light impurities to ride upon the liquid. The pulp enters the drum near the wider flange 6, and the small sectional area of the purified pulp discharge passage between the flange 5 and the plate 7 enables the material to build up a considerable thickness in the drum, so that vortices do not reach the inner surface. The light impurities can be removed by a skimmer. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the surface 7 partly encloses the drum 1 and an adjustable plate 8 on the drum enables the sectional area of the discharge opening to be varied and the stream of material to be throttled. In a further modification, the drum is enclosed by a second drum and the purified pulp passes through the space between the two drums. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the second drum 9 extends to the height of the flange 6 and forms the outlet with the adjustable plate 8. An additional drum 11 may be used in a preliminary purification to increase the capacity for holding heavy impurities. In a further modification, each end of the drum is enclosed so that the discharge path is divided into two parallel paths which join at an adjustable opening level with the centre of the drum.
