Abstract

497,053. Centrifugal separators. ELKINGTON, H. D. (Erkensator Ges.) March 10, 1937, No. 3996/38. Divided out of 496,998. [Class 23] A centrifuge for the purification of paperpulp and the like has two drums mounted one within the other and fed consecutively ; one or each drum is provided with inwardly projecting rings for assisting the formation of cushions of fibres in which the heavy impurities are embedded. The distance between the drum walls increases in the upward direction ; in the form shown in Fig. 1, the inner drum 2 has retaining rings 3, 4, and the diameter of the part between these rings is less than that of the lower part. The outer drum 1 also has retaining rings 5, 6 to hold the deposited fibres, and a discharge passage for the purified pulp is formed between the rings 7, 8 at the top of the drum. The light impurities are held by the ring 8. The lower part of the ring 7 is cylindrical and its upper part inclines inwards towards the axis of the machine. The lower part of the ring 8 inclines outwards and upwards towards the ring 7 as shown, and its upper part is parallel to the upper part of the ring 7. The lower part of the discharge channel thus has a conical cross section. In a modification, the inner drum has a straight wall, while the diameter of the part of the outer drum between the rings 5, 6 is greater than that of the lower part. In a further modification both drums are of conical form and diverge progressively from each other.
