Abstract
367,301. Centrifugal machines. BRYSON, T. A., R.F.D. No. 3, Troy, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 14, 1931, No. 22990. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1930. [Class 23.] A centrifugal separator, particularly for the treatment of paper pulp or other fibrous material, has a number of rotary drums each provided with means to restrain the axial flow of impure material while permitting the axial flow of a thin annulus of pure material. The spindle 1 is tapered at its lower end and carries the hub 3 provided with radial arms 6 and the funnel shaped member 7. The outer and inner drums 10, 14 are supported by the member 7 and by projections on the arms 6 respectively. The drum 10 has a top ring 12 and a number of baffles 11 spaced along its inner wall. The baffles consist of rings with elongated or circular holes 110. The inner drum 14 has top and bottom rings 15, 16 and a number of intermediate baffles similar to those in the outer drum. The feed takes place through concentric pipes 19, 22 the inner 22 of which has an adjustable weir 18 at its top. Material is supplied through the pipe 171 to the pan 17 ; some of it passes over the weir 18, through the pipe 19 on to the flange 20 from which it is thrown to the drum 10. As it passes up the drum 10 the heavy impurities move to the wall of the drum and the light impurities move inwards. The pure intermediate layer passes through the holes in the baffles and over the top ring 12 to the discharge gutter 26, while the impure layers are stopped by the baffles. Some of the material passes from the pan 17 through the outer feed pipe 22 and is thrown by the disc 23 to the inner drum 14. A similar separating action occurs in this drum and the pure liquid is discharged over the top ring 15 to the trough 26. In some cases the baffles may be omitted and skimming rings provided at the top of each drum.
