497,052. Centrifugal separators. ELKINGTON, H. D. (Erkensator Ges.) March 10, 1937, No. 3995/38. Divided out of 496,998. [Class 23] A centrifuge for the purification of paper pulp or the like has at least two outlets for the purified pulp and the inlet of one is farther than the remainder from the axis of the machine ; the outer outlet exercises a throttling action and the inner outlets act simply as discharge channels. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the outer ring 4 of the drum 3 retains the heavy material deposited to form the cushion 1 and the inner ring 5 retains the light impurities 6. The outlet between the rings 4, 5 is subdivided by the ring 7 in such a way that the cross-section of the inlet to the channel between the rings 4, 7 is less than that of the channel between the rings 5, 7. In a modification the ring 7 is placed above the ring 4. In a further modification the discharge outlet is formed between two rings 8, 9, Fig. 3, which have lower cylindrical parts and upper parts inclining inwards towards the axis. The outlet is divided into inner and outer channels by a similarly - shaped ring 10, and the outer channel acts as the throttled channel. The light impurities stopped by the ring 9 may be collected by the skimming tube 11. Either the upper parts or the lower parts of the rings 8, 9 can be made to approach each other and the lower part of the ring 10 may be omitted. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the outer discharge outlet is formed by one or more slits or perforations 13 arranged circumferentia1ly in the ring 10.
