420,689. Retort furnaces &c. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTION DE FOURS, 8, Place des Etats-Unis, Montrouge, Seine, France. June 12, 1933, No. 16761. Convention date, June 11, 1932. [Class 51 (ii)] In a vertical retort or coke oven, in which the vertical flues at the two sides of the retort are connected at their upper ends so that the heating-gases will flow therethrough in series, combustion is effected in stages by the admission of additional combustion air, and the connecting channels between the two sets of flues are arranged at the sides so that the retort can be of maximum capacity. As shown in connection with a reversibly-fired retort, regeneratively-heated gas is supplied through the conduit 1 to the lower ends of the flues 2, which extend continuously over the heated portion of the retort, while the heated air is admitted to the flues at different levels through the conduit 4, passages 5 and ports 7. The combustion products pass through the side passages 8 to the flues 9 at the opposite side of the retort and to the regenerators through the conduits 11, 12. Regulation is effected by solid or perforated blocks R<3>, R<2>, and separation between the flues 25 maintained by blocks R'.
