Abstract

419,539. Aeroplanes. MOBBS, R. O., Trading Estate, Slough, Buckinghamshire. June 2, 1933, No. 15927. [Class 4.] An emergency means of escape from the fuselage of an aeroplane comprises a hatch slidably carried by a frame secured to the fuselage roof and means carried by the frame to secure the hatch in normal closed position. As shown, the hatch slides in guides 14 secured to the frame members 4, 4<a> which are secured to the fuselage roof and form two sides of the hatch opening. The other two sides of the opening are formed by a member 10 and a stream-lined member 8 each provided, respectively, with a gutter 24, 18 having outlet openings. A light-metal member 20 in the gutter 18 holds in place a rubber member 22 ; the member 8 is faced by a strip member 16 and the rear edge of the member 10 is chamfered. The fuselage plating is flanged up as at 12. The hatch comprises a frame covered by two thicknesses of waterproof fabric 25, 27. Each side of the hatch is provided with two flexible metal strips 30, 32. The strip 30 is covered by a strip of felt 34 and slides in the guide 14, a further strip of felt 36 overlays the guide and is engaged by a flexible, e.g. cane rod 40 sewn into the fabric and folded against the underside of the metal strip 32. The front edge of the hatch is formed by a forwardly projecting portion 42 of a frame member 41 and over which extend the two fabric members to engage rods 44, 46, Fig. 3, as shown. The fabric is wrapped around a strip 48 and secured together with a rubber strip 50, to a frame member 45 which engages when the hatch is closed with the chamfered edge. The hatch is held closed by a clip 54 having a wedging action and engaging in a groove in the hatch member 41.
