Abstract

372,050. Wind, insect, and like screens for vehicles &c. WILSON, A. S., The Elms, Gosberton, near Spalding, Lincolnshire. March 28, 1931, No. 9456. [Classes 103 (ii) and 108 (i).] In a rail or road vehicle or ship's cabin of the kind in which a sliding roof section or window is designed to cover or uncover a roof or body opening, the opening when uncovered is adapted to be filled in either automatically or non-automatically by a screen of fabric netting or wire gauze mounted on a spring roller or in a rigid frame and functioning as a ventilator, dust or insect screen or as an antidazzle screen. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the gauze screen a is carried on a spring roller b located at the forward edge of the roof and is attached by press-buttons, clips, screws, or studs and slots to the forward edge of a roof section c adapted to slide over a fixed rear section d, so that the screen a is automatically extended when the section c is displaced rearwardly. A second gauze screen a<1> is also provided to fill in a window opening in the side of the vehicle when the window is dropped. If desired, a flexible extension j, Fig. 6, of cloth or like material may connect the adjacent edges of the screen a and sliding roof section c to prevent draughts from entering between these parts. The roller b may be supported in a box-like casing n, Fig. 11, attached to the body i of the vehicle so as to co-operate with a revolving roller brush o for removing dust &c. from the gauze screen a. Taut spring wires may be stretched across the opening behind the gauze screen to prevent the latter from sagging under external wind pressure. Other constructions are described in which the screen a is supported rigidly at its edges and adapted to be slid by hand from beneath the fixed roof section d so as to fill in the opening left by the sliding section c, the screen a being guided either by rollers y as shown in Fig. 12 or by sliding on tubular guides.
