Abstract

In the destruction of weeds on cultivated land by means of chlorates steps are taken to cause rapid decomposition of the chlorates after destruction of the weeds so that the land may again be cultivated: this result may be attained (1) by using easily decomposed chlorates such as those of iron or tin or a mixture of these, with or without a catalyst, such as magnesium chloride, accelerating the decomposition and applied simultaneously with the chlorates or after the weeds have been killed; or (2) by using any chlorate, followed, after destruction of the weeds, by a reducing agent such as ferrous sulphate or other divalent iron salt, sodium hydrosulphite, a bisulphite of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, a nitrite, or a hypophosphite. The prior use of chlorates and iron sulphate applied simultaneously, as a mixture, is referred to.
