Abstract

418,853. Tubes for heat-exchangers. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Superheater Co.; 60, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 16, 1933, No. 22894. [Class 64 (iii).] In a heat-exchange unit consisting of parallel pipes 1, 2, Fig. 1, united at their ends by forging, and intended particularly for use in feedwater heaters and stills, to facilitate the insertion of a cleaning rod in the pipes, the throat portion 3 of the forged union at one end is formed in line with one of the pipes, and the throat portion 4 of the forged union at the other end is formed in line with the other pipe. The throat portions may extend beyond the walls of the apparatus and be connected to the throat portions of adjacent elements by external boxes or headers, or the throat portions may connect a number of pipes in series as shown in Fig. 4, the ends of the throats being provided with removable closures such as those described in Specifications 155,623, [Class 123 (iii)], and 371,707, [Group XXVIII]. Two pipes are first so forged together as to form a waist portion 25, Fig. 7, which is then heated to forging temperature and fed on a mandrel 26 and subjected to hammering and swaging between dies 27, 28. The waist portion is then reduced in diameter and brought into alignment with one of the pipes by forging between die blocks 30, 31, Fig. 10. A mandrel 35 enters the waist portion during forging. Specifications 6304/15, [Class 83 (ii)], 355,414, and 355,415, [both in Group XXII], also are referred to.
