Abstract

398,414. Making steam generators. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Superheater Co. ; 60, E. 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 28, 1933, No. 6084. [Class 83 (ii).] Tubular headers for steam superheaters, reheaters, feedwater heaters and other heat exchangers with thickened portions extending longitudinally of the header, are made by bending one or more steel plates into portions of a cylinder, positioning between the edges or each pair of opposed edges a heavy bar of width equal to the space between the edges, and welding the edges to the sides of the bar. The bar 2, with a series of apertures to receive the tubular elements and with blind holes to receive the clamping studs, is inserted between the edges of an incomplete cylinder 1 formed by bending, and welding at 5 is effected by an oxyacetylene blowpipe or by electric arc welding. Before bending the edges of the plate are machined or otherwise prepared so that they are at rightangles to the surface of the plate. The inner edges of the sides of the bar may be flush with the inner surface of the cylinder, as shown, or the outer face may be concentric with the outer surface of the cylinder with a substantial portion of the bar projecting inwardly of the header. The bar may be formed with two series of holes 6 for the tubular elements, as shown in Fig. 4. The inner face of the bar may be plane or curved. The holes may be drilled in the bar before incorporating it in the header or after welding. Specification 167,134, [Class 99 (i), Pipes and tubes, Joints &c. for], is referred to.
