Abstract

446,423. Making steam superheaters. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Superheater Co. ; 60, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 29, 1934, No. 30989. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Welding. - Tubular heat - exchangers such as steam superheaters consisting of forge welded unions or return bends of carbon steel, &c. welded to tubes of heat resisting alloy, such as low carbon steel containing chromium, nickel, copper or molybdenum or to tubes of carbon steel coated by calorizing, which are not readily forge welded, are made by electric flash or otherwise welding at 3, the alloy &c. tubes 1, either to short lengths of carbon steel &c. tubes 2 or to a preformed breeches forging of this metal, and after removing the internal burrs from the joints 3, completing the union or return bend by forge welding. If separate short tubes are used, the breeches forging is made after welding the joints 3, the internal burrs at which are removed either by a separate tool before forming the forging or by the tools which form the forging ; forging may be effected as described in Specifications 6304/15, [Class 83 (ii)], and 355,414. A return bend can then be made as described in Specification 120,042, [Class 83 (ii)]. The alloy &c. tubes may lie at the same distance apart throughout as in Fig. 1, or may be offset near their ends as shown in Fig. 4. If the union is to be joined to a header or another tube it is forged to cylindrical form, and the forging operation may be repeated to form a long cylindrical union portion as described in Specification 355,415. This union portion may be aligned with the space between the tubes or with the axis of one of the tubes as described in Specification 418,853. Bends or unions may be provided with access openings by applying removable closures to the cylindrical portions as described in Specifications 155,623, [Class 99 (i)], 371,707 and 431,606, [both in Group XXVIII]. A serpentine element may be formed by connecting a number of tubes at opposite ends by return bends. A number of lengths of tube may be united at opposite ends to form at each end a common union for connection to a header or three or more tubes may be united to form a return bend.
