418,582. Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gearing; differential gearing. HAMER, R., 151, Cotham Brow, Redland, Bristol, and HEPWORTH, H. C., 3, Brownsville Road, Heaton Moor, Near Stockport, Cheshire. March 25, 1933, Nos. 9029/33 and 12386/34. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to variable-speed gear- 'ing in which planet pinions E, Fig. 1, mesh with a common driven sun gear C and are rigid through shafts 8 with paddle wheels F which rotate in resisting liquid in a driving casing B. The paddle wheels F rotate in recesses 19, Fig. 4, one for each wheel, which open inwards into a common chamber and are bounded by segmental shroudings 20 concentric with the wheels F and just clear of the peripheries of these wheels as shown in Fig. 2. At points P of nearest mutual approach of oppositely-moving paddles there is no shrouding. Oil there exerts a braking action on the paddles and is projected into the recesses 19 which become full of oil under pressure. The paddle or vane wheels F have side cheeks 21 connecting vanes which are alternately long and short, as shown at 22, 23. Aligned driving and driven shafts A, D, Fig. 1, are fast to the casing B and gear C respectively. A chamber B<1> enclosing the toothed gearing communicates with the recesses 19 by openings 24 leading to the centres of the paddle wheels F. An arrangement of external pipes G for cooling the oil is shown in Fig. 4. Each pipe G leads out of a recess 19 at 27, and, after carrying the oil once round outside the casing B concentrically, delivers the oil into the gear casing B<1>. The pipes G are provided with radiating fins 33 and are held in place by straps 34. An adaptation as a vehicle differential is shown in Fig. 5. The vane-wheels F<2> are connected alternately to planet pinions E<2> on opposite sides of the driving casing, and each set of planets drives its own sun gear C<2> on one of the ends of the divided axle D<2>.
