Abstract
363,489. Hydraulic transmission of power. STEADMAN, A. H., 23, Haigville Gardens, Barkingside, Essex. Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36163. [Class 69 (ii).] A hydraulic coupling has a rotary casing with blades co-operating with the blades of a pair of rotors, differential gearing having its sun wheels carried by the rotors, and means for varying the fluid resistance between the casing and the rotors. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the rotary casing is divided to form a reservoir 2, and compartments A, B accommodating rotors 9, 8 ; the rotors have channel-shaped blades co-operating with blades on opposite sides of a member 3, and sun wheels meshing with pinions on a spider fixed to a tubular shaft 11, provided with a brake drum 12. The rotor 8 is keyed to a shaft 10, and the rotor 9 is prevented from reverse rotation by pawls adapted to engage a fixed ratchet wheel 42, A fixed tube 6, which may be telescopic, conducts liquid from the reservoir 2 to a compartment 1a, and the fluid resistance in the compartments A, B is varied by means of valves 4, 5, which control communication between the compartments A, B, and the compartment 1a or reservoir 2. The valves are operated by a cam disc 41 adapted to move scroll members 33, 34 into engagement with projections 35 on the valve stems. The final drive is taken from a spider 13 carrying level pinions meshing with pinions on the shafts 10, 11. In a modification, the valves each comprise two members, one with an oblique slot 44, Fig. 3, the other with a slot parallel to the axis.
