Abstract
417,853. Vapour arc converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GALLIZIA, E., c/o General Electric Co., Witton, Birming- ham. March 13, 1933, No. 7567. [Class 39 (i).] A deionizing grid comprises means adapted to divide the arc ink a number of curved or sinuous paths and means such as wires or strips further to divide the said paths. Bent molybdenum strips 4 having an odd or even number of faces are secured at their ends within a sleeve 1, which is mounted through insulators 3 within an anode shield 2. The upper faces of the strips are inclined, preferably, outwardly from the centre of the rectifier. Additional strips 8, which may be inclined to the axis of shield, are provided. The length of the sleeve 1 may be one-third of its diameter or, alternatively, the sleeve may be extended as shown in dotted lines. Some of the faces of the strips 4, e.g. all faces sloping in the same direction and situated on the same level may be perforated or the strips may be formed of expanded metal or wire mesh. In a modification, the strips or wires 8 may be located at the juncture of two sets of V-shaped strips. The grid may be connected to the tank, or may be given a positive potential to facilitate starting and upon back ignition, a relay may be adapted to remove the potential bias. The invention is applicable to converters provided with side arms.
