Abstract
416,368. Cistern valves. PHILLIPPS, M. T., Esplanade South, Henley Beach, South Australia. May 23, 1934, No. 15360. [Class 135.] A ball cock valve has a chamber with an internal annular discharge port co-operating with a slotted piston to open or close communication between the port and the interior of the piston, the latter also having perforations in the end, a central closing pad and a perforated disc held in position by a packing gland. The valve chamber a with annular discharge port a<1> connected to an outlet a<3>, has an inlet o<2> closed by the pad e on the end of the hollow piston d. As the level in a cistern or the like drops, the cam p<1>moves the rod h to the right and the inlet is opened, allowing water to flow into the valve chamber. This water passes through the perforations d' in the end of the piston, through a hole in a disc f and thence by axial and cross passages h<2> in the rod h to the other side of the piston, the latter is thus balanced and it is stated that " hissing " is overcome ; further movement of the piston to the right opens communication between the main ports d<2> and a<1>. No packing is used in the gland for the rod h, but any leak past the valve chamber is carried away through the subsidiary outlet m.
