[Class 40 (v).] In a thermionic valve amplifier comprising two valves I, II, in series, in which the incoming signal e is applied to the grid of valve I, the amplification is controlled by varying the voltage e3 applied between the cathode and second grid of valve II, causing more or less of the current through the valves to flow over the shunt path i2 instead of over the path i4 which includes the output impedance J. The invention is also applicable to circuits utilizing magnetron valves.
