Abstract

433,545. Valve amplifying circuits. BEVAN, R. H. L., SMITH, H., and HILL, E. G., H.M. Signal School, Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5135. [Class 40, (v)] A thermionic amplifier of the type employing a gas discharge tube as an intervalve coupling is stabilized by causing the anode current of the output valve to control the grid bias of the input valve in such manner that any change in the anode current of the output stage (other than that due to the signal) is counteracted ; a time delay makes the control action slower than that of changes in signal voltage. In the arrangement shown, variations in anode current of the last valve produce grid bias variations in the first stage, obtained from a resistance shunt across the output valve, through a biassing battery B and delay circuit R, C. The upper portion of the potentiometer P may be a gas discharge tube. Where the amplifier comprises an even number of stages, P is connected between the cathode of the last valve (which is of the indirectly heated type) and earth, Fig. 1 (not shown). The invention is particularly applicable to Morse frequency impulse amplifiers. Specification 369,578 is referred to.
