[Class 38 (ii).] A load 10 is supplied from ar A.C. source througt a discharge device 6 in parallel with which is an auxiliary discharge tube 11, the voltage between the electrodes of the auxil iary tube being smaller than the voltage between the electrodes of the main tube. On failure of the main discharge tube, the auxiliary tube commences to conduct to supply the load temporarily and also to energize a signal device connected at 18. In a modification, the anodes of the auxiliary discharge are connected to the ends of the transformer winding and the reduction in voltage is obtained by means of a battery connected in the cathode lead.
