448,210. Converting. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Sept. 4, 1935, No. 24706. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1934. [Class 38 (ii)] [See also Group XL] A gas- or vapour-filled rectifier is provided with at least two groups of anodes wherein at least one group is furnished with means to increase its blocking voltage above that of other groups and one of the groups is connected in accordance with the required output voltage to a polyphase supply by means of a switching device. Groups of anodes 13, 15 for charging low- and high-voltage batteries 21. 19, respectively, are adapted to be connected to tappings on the secondary winding of a transformer 2 in such manner that only one group can be connected in circuit. A cathode 17 is connected to a winding 4 the centre point of which is connected to one end of the battery 19 or 21. The switches may be mechanically connected together and the blocking voltage may be increased by means of wire screens which surround the anodes. To facilitate ignition or control the anode arms may comprise portions of ferrochromium. An auxiliary discharge may be utilized to neutralize the electric charges which occur at the openings in the anode arms.
