Abstract

343,348. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Lennox, T. C. ; 24, Waverley Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) March 14, 1930, No. 8278. Convention date, March 15, 1929. [Class 38 (ii).] Vapour and vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of.-In an arrangement for transmitting power between A.C. and D.C. circuits through a polyphase transformer and mercury arc or similar discharge device associated with an interphase reactor system for voltage regulation, the voltage conditions in the reactor system are controlled or modified by a circuit including a condenser so as to give a flat compound voltage characteristic to the converter. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement in which a 3-phase circuit 19 is connected through a 3-phase to 6-phase transformer 17 and mercury arc rectifier 10 to a D.C. circuit the negative terminal of which is connected through an auxiliary transformer 24 and interphase reactance 27 to the neutral points 22, 23 of the two 3-phase windings forming the 6-phase side of the main transformer. The condenser circuit 33, 32 for modifying the voltage conditions in the reactor system is associated with the auxiliary transformer 24. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the condenser is inserted between the auxiliary transformer and the interphase reactor, a series winding carrying the D.C. load current is placed on the core of the reactor 27 for varying the saturation conditions therein with load current, and an equalizing connection is brought out from the series winding to facilitate parallel working with other machinery such as compound wound generators or synchronous converters. Other modifications of the system of condenser compounding are described in which (1) the condenser is connected between a reactor system in the negative lead of the D.C. system and an auxiliary transformer comprising a number of primary windings connected one in series with each anode lead (Fig. 5, not shown) and (2) the main transformer has a 12-phase winding connected to a 12-anode rectifier, two condenser circuits, one for each group of reactor windings, being provided (Fig. 6, not shown).
