Abstract

388,126. Converting electric currents. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Nov. 7, 1931, No. 30930. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1930. [Class 38 (ii).] Vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangement of.-In a rectifying or like arrangement comprising one or more discharge tubes such as neon lamps each having a cathode and two or more anodes, all the anodes, when the device is in operation, are in electrical connection through switching-in devices to points of a transformer winding which obtain the same potential at different times and each anode has its own switching-in device so that the anodes in one and the same tube may be switched in at different instants, thus facilitating the ignition. The arrangement illustrated comprises two rectifier tubes 1, 2 connected in parallel. The anodes 3, 4 of the tube 1 and the anodes 6, 7 of the tube 2 are connected as shown through resistances 9 .. 12 and switching-in relays 21, 24, 22, 23 respectively to the ends of the transformer secondary winding 13 of which the centre tapping is connected through the direct current terminals 14, 15 with the centre tappings of heating current transformers 16, 17 for the cathodes 5, 8, the primary winding 18 of the main transformer being connected through a main switch 25 to the alternating current terminals 19, 20. On closing the switch 25 the anodes are necessarily switched-in at different instants owing to differences of lag in the relays. The relays may be replaced by ordinary switches or by a drum arrangement for switching-in the anodes of the same tube in succession. Alternatively the winding 13 may be connected at one end through a single relay to the resistances 9, 11, and at the other end through another relay to the resistances 10, 12. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement of a single rectifier with two anodes and with relays provided in the leads connecting the phase windings of the transformer to the terminal 14. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
