Abstract

Azo dyes, insoluble in water, are made in substance or on the fibre, by coupling diazotised aminochrysene (obtained by nitrating chrysene in glacial acetic acid) with a coupling component, e.g. arylamides of naphthalene-o-hydroxycarboxylic acids, 2-hydroxyanthracene-3-carboxylic acid (see Specification 367,907), 2-hydroxycarbazole-3-carboxylic acid (Specification 343,164), and 2-hydroxy-a -benzocarbazole - 3 - carboxylic acid (see Specification 330,643, [Class 2 (iii)], and acetoaceticarylides, e.g. bisacetoacetic arylides (cf. Specification 210,217, [Class 2 (iii)]). Blue to violet to brown shades are obtained. In examples the following components are specified: anilide, m-nitranilide and a -naphthylamide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, 1-(5<1>-hydroxy-1 : 2 : 1<1> : 2<1>-benzocarbazole-4<1>-carboylamino) -2-methyl-4-methoxybenzene, diacetoacetyl-o-tolidine and acetoaceticanilide.
