[Class 38 (iv).] An electromagnetic switch, adapted to control two or more auxiliary load circuits in a load levelling system, comprises two or more mercury contact switches with floating armatures f, the switches being independently adjustable and under the control of a single electromagnet h in the main load circuit. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the armature f and mercury contacts e of each switch are mounted in sealed containers d provided with integral end rings d<1> adjustably mounted on vertical rods j. The effect of the electromagnet h on the armatures may be opposed by permanent magnets m adjustably mounted beneath the switches, in order to vary the current values at which the switches open and close. In a modification, Fig. 6, three switches 1-3 are controlled by a single electromagnet h, and the polepieces of the magnet carry auxiliary windings h<1> in series with the auxiliary load circuits. These windings may be connected so as to assist or oppose the main winding ; in the former case the interval between the opening and closing values of the current is narrowed, and in the latter case it is widened.
