Abstract

486,688. Electromagnetic and magnetic switches. WILKINSON, G. March 13, 1937, No. 7399. [Class 38 (v)] In a magnetically - operated switch having an armature b adapted to establish or break connection between mercury cups d, d<1> in a container a, the armature consists of a strip of metal shaped as shown and pivoting about its right-hand end where it makes permanent contact with the mercury d<1>. The armature may be operated by an electromagnet X, X<1> as shown, or by the approach of a permanent magnet or by movement of a strip of iron between the poles of a magnet so as to shunt its flux and prevent it attracting the armature b, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The switch may also be arranged to make a circuit when the armature is attracted. In a modification there are two dipping contacts and three mercury cups, constituting a two-way switch.
