Abstract
Sodium cyanide is obtained from solutions thereof by rapidly heating a thin layer of the solution by contact with a hot body having such a temperature above the boiling point of the solution that evaporation to the dry salt is effected in a brief time. The process is also applicable to drying a moist mass of sodium cyanide or the hydrate NaCN.2H2O since at raised temperature these are converted into solutions of sodium cyanide. The heated surface may be made of metal, e.g. iron, may have a temperature of 140--300 DEG C. and may take the form of a revolving drum internally heated by steam. The concentrated sodium cyanide solution is applied without preheating for example in the form of a spray or drops, or a thin layer of flowing solution. The dried cyanide adheres to the heated surface in a compact layer and may be scraped off. The water vapour formed should be removed as quickly as possible. By working at reduced pressure, the temperature may be correspondingly reduced.
