Abstract

410,580. Controlling variable-speed gearing. ARCHDALE & CO., Ltd., J., and JEWSBURY, J., Ledsam Street, Birmingham. Feb. 24, 1933, No. 5672. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed gearing is controlled from a shaft or member d which is turned to different final positions by the sliding of a preselected member b. The slider b is first turned from a preselector h so as to slide in different guides or be otherwise held while sliding in different fixed angular positions so that the final position of the transmitting member d is varied. In a form shown in Fig. 1, the member d is a sleeve which turns upon the slider b which passes through it. Upon a crank k the slider b carries inner and outer bowls b, m, Fig. 2. The preselector h turns the slider b so as to bring the outer bowl m opposite one of a number of guide slots p in a fixed cylinder o. Then a lever c, Fig. 1, which may be connected to the main clutch pedal on a vehicle, slides the slider b so as to bring the inner bowl l against a profile cam n on the member d, the member d is turned until the bowl reaches the bottom q of the V-cam n. There is a return spring r. A cam g is shown by which the member d operates a gear-changing striker fork e, but the gearchanging means beyond the member d may be of any suitable form such as a simple lever. In a form shown in Fig. 4, the cylinder o and outer bowl m are dispensed with. The slider b is in the form of a cup carrying the inner bowl l and having a sliding-pin u and gear connection t with the preselector h. The preselection turns one of a number of notches v on the slider b opposite a dog x operated by the lever c which dog holds the slider b against turning as the bowl l strikes the profile cam n and turns the transmitting member d to its final characteristic position. In a form shown in Fig. 5, the profile cam n is on the slider b which is kept from turning after preselection by engaging guide slots 2 on a fixed shaft y which passes through and supports the member d which carries the bowl l which co-operates with the cam n.
