Abstract

692,930. Controlling change-speed gearing. ASQUITH, Ltd., W., and JOHNSON. A. May 22, 1951 [Feb. 22, 1950], No. 4505/50. Class 80 (ii). To prevent attempted gear changing at high tooth speeds the initial movement of one or more manual gear change levers disconnects the power to the driving motor, and continued movement to effect a gear change is prevented until the input shaft has slowed to a predetermined speed. A gear lever G, Fig. 1, is connected to a shaft F which must be raised to engage a clutch M, N connecting the lever and shaft to the gear change mechanism O. A stop H is engageable with a slot in collar on the shaft F and determines two angular positions thereof. The initial upward movement of the shaft operates, through an adjustable collar J, a switch (not shown) which disconnects the driving motor, and angular movement of shaft F to change gear is prevented by a slidable pin D which obstructs a lever E on the shaft until the pin is retracted by a solenoid C<SP>1</SP> energised by a governor-operated switch on the input shaft when the latter has slowed down. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 a second gear lever R, additional to the lever G shown in Fig. 1, operates a gear change shaft Q and is interlocked with the same pin D of the solenoid C<SP>1</SP>, The end of the lever R co-operates with a notched gate plate T so that before the shaft Q can be rotated the lever must be rocked, thereby sliding a sleeve R' through a shaft R' and pin R<SP>4</SP>, to operate a motor switch S through a spring plunger R'. The pin D engages a hole in a lever keyed to a shaft P' which is geared to a shaft P<SP>5</SP> on which is mounted a crank arm linked to a crank on the shaft Q. By these means the shafts Q (Fig. 5) and F (Fig. 1) cannot be rotated to effect a gear change until the driving motor has been switched off and the input shaft has slowed to operate the solenoid C<SP>1</SP>.
