Abstract
Phosphates in phosphate rocks are concentrated by agitating a pulp of the rock with a naphtenic acid material and separating the concentrate either by aerating to form a froth or by passing the pulp over a vibrating table. The pulp is preferably alkaline, and insoluble and unsaponifiable oil, such as fuel oil, is preferably added. The naphthenic acid may be saponified before addition to the pulp by treating the naphthenic acid material with an excess of caustic soda.
