Abstract

515,607. Concentrating ores. SMIDTH & CO. AKTIESELSKABET, F. L. Sept. 12, 1938, No. 26577. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1937. [Class 82 (ii)] An aqueous emulsion prepared by emulsifying together in water a fatty acid, a mineral' oil, and a caustic alkali or ammonium hydrooxide is used as a collecting agent in the froth flotation concentration of oxidized ores, particularly in the concentration of calcite from argillaceous limestones, marls, and chalks, and in the concentration of phosphate ores. The emulsion is preferably made by mixing an aqueous solution of the alkali with a preformed mixture of the fatty acid and oil. The alkali is preferably added in an amount in excess of that required to saponify the fatty acid, e.g. sodium hydroxide in an amount equal to 20-25 per cent. by weight of the fatty acid and oil. The fatty acid used may be, for example. oleic acid, fish oil fatty acids, or refined tall oil; the mineral oil may be an oil such as kerosene or, preferably, a medium weight fuel oil. The oil-water ratio of the emulsion is preferably between 1:20 and 1:33. The frothing may be controlled by varying the proportion of mineral oil to fatty acid in the emulsion. and also by adding cresylic acid, alcohol frothers &c. to the flotation cells. The concentration of calcite ores in order to produce raw materials suitable for use in cement manufacture is described; in treating an argillaceous limestone the collector is added in stages and a frother consisting of aliphatic alcohols of a boiling point between 152‹ and 162‹C. is used. In concentrating a phosphate ore, an emulsion prepared from tall oil, fuel oil, and sodium hydroxide is used together with additional fuel oil and sodium. hydroxide. Specifications 478,275 and 515,606, and U.S.A. Specifications 1,986,816 and 1,986,817 are referred to.
