Abstract

A solid size for addition to paper pulp and which may contain protective colloids is made by emulsifying molten rosin with a small quantity of water and converting the molten or ground product into the required form with ammonia or ammonium salts insufficient effect saponification of the rosin. The size may be produced at the gum distilleries by cooling the hot rosin to about 100 DEG C., the ammonia &c. and casein being added after emulsifying with the water. In an example, 1500 kilograms of rosin is supplied to an autoclave, and 150 kilograms of water slowly pumped in through a sprinkler at the bottom of the autoclave, the water being slowly vaporized 45 kilograms of solid casein is added, the autoclave closed, 55 kilograms of ammonia, dissolved in water, are then pumped in keeping the pressure below 10 atmospheres; excess ammonia is condensed for further use. In another example similar to that above, 35 kilograms of hot concentrated ammonium carbonate are pumped in instead of the 55 kilograms of ammonia.
