[Class 125 (ii).] Apparatus for sealing caps on bottles &c. comprises a sealing device for sealing on the caps after they have been applied thereto, and a support for the bottles, said support and device being relatively movable vertically, the sealing device including a sealing head and plunger, the latter being adapted to move inwardly the members of a segmental ring by direct engagement therewith, to cause a radially deformable elastic sealing ring, engaged by said segmental ring to be contracted around the top of the bottle &c. Bottles, with caps loosely applied, are passed two by two to the cap sealing position. Twin heads 163 are vertically reciprocated by an eccentric 172 and, in descending, engage the bottle lips to press a rubber 191 on to the tops of the caps. Rocker arms 197, pivotally carried by the heads 163, now engage adjustable bumper blocks 200, or fixed lower blocks, to depress spring-biassed plungers 176. A bevelled surface 179 on each plunger engages the sloping surfaces 180 of the guided elements of a segmental pressure ring 181 to force inwardly a rubber ring 190 which firmly presses the skirt of the cap to the bottle neck. The surfaces 179, 180 are lubricated by oil from little reservoirs carried in each segment of the ring by fibrous material placed therein. The apparatus is associated with a cap-making station, a cap-embossing station and a capapplying station, as set forth in Specification 409,389, the former operating at twice the speed of the sealing apparatus.
