Class 125 (2) In a closuring machine for containers, bottles or the like supported by springs 2 and having a fixed curling die 3 brought into action by depression of the container R by a presser plate 4 engaging the cap C, spreading of the peripheral. part of the cap is prevented by annular jaw 5 which is depressed to such a level that its working edge extends below the container mouth and which 'fits within the upper part of die 3. The plate 4 is carried on a stem 7 carried by a plate 8 which is vertically reciprocated. A block 6 is screwed on stem 7, is acted on by springs 9 engaged by the plate 8 and is transversed by bores in which work the stems of bolts 10 carrying the jaw 5. In operation, the plate 8 descends and, through the springs 9, causes the plate 4 to engage the cap and start the curling. The plate 8 then engages the bolts 10 and causes the jaw 5 to engage the edge of the cap and the curling is completed. If desired, the jaw 5 may descend before the plate 4. The last motion between the bolts 10 and the plate 8 may be varied The die 3 and the jaw 5 may be made up of sections. An annular or disc-shaped gasket G'is provided. The die 3 may be constructed to curl only spaces sections of the cap skirt. The gasket may be disposed between the cap skirt and the outer wall of the container. In a modification, Fig. 9, the vertical wall of the jaw 105 has spaced notches 205 in alignment with raised points 303 on the curling die 103. This leaves areas of less compression in the gasket G and hence allows excess pressure within the container to be relieved. The container support may be rendered adjustable by providing it with co-acting concave and convex bearing surfaces.
