Abstract
To increase the resistance to wear of mechanical and constructional parts made of light metal, the parts are roughened by cutting screw threads or grooves therein and are then coated with hard metal, e.g. steel, by spraying. The process may be applied to reconditioning worn or damaged parts such as cylinders or pistons of aircraft, automobile, and similar engines. A cylinder is reconditioned by cutting screw threads or grooves on the worn or damaged surface, spraying on an excess of hard metal, preferably steel, and then working to the original dimensions. In reconditioning a worn piston, excess of hard metal is sprayed on after the grooves or screw threads have been cut, the piston being then worked to its original dimensions and the piston ring grooves recut. The hardness of the coating may be increased by adjusting the composition of the gas mixture employed in the spraying process to increase the amount of scale present in the sprayed steel coating. Specification 376,117 is referred to.
