Abstract
433,629. Making pistons, bearings, crank shafts, and machine details. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Rose-Engle Co. ; 711, Sanford Street, Wilmington, California, U.S.A.) Feb. 19, 1934, No. 5391. [Class 83 (ii)] [See also Group II] A metallic band is inlaid in the surface of a metallic machine element, e.g. a piston, crank shaft, or bearing, by cutting a groove in the surface of the element by means of a cutting tool which is shaped or set so that it breaks the metal in the surface of the groove and leaves it abnormally rough and then depositing metal in the groove by a spraying process. The process is particularly applicable to inlaying a band of hard metal, e.g. steel, in a machine element made of a light alloy. A piston 1 held in lathe supports 2 is rotated in contact with a cutting tool which cuts a screw thread beneath the surface of the metal producing a wide groove with a serrated bottom 3, the tool being set so that it breaks the metal slightly leaving the surface of the groove abnormally rough. The sides of the wide groove are undercut at 4. A spraying pistol 5 is mounted on a post on a carriage which can be moved longitudinally with respect to the piston and the piston is rotated while the metal is sprayed into the groove. The deposited metal is then ground down to the required size. Specification 408,067 is referred to.
