405,495. Converting. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. May 1, 1933, No. 12675. Convention date, April 30, 1932. [Class 38 (ii).] Relates to a method of operating a grid controlled mercury vapour value as a rectifier or inverter, in which change-over is effected by a reversing switch in the D.C. circuit, and consists in reducing the A.C. voltage on the valve during rectifier operation. This is to ensure effective commutation during inverter operation and to allow the valve to operate at a maximum power factor during rectifier operation. Tappings may be provided on the supply transformer which are altered when changing from inverter to rectifier operation and vice versa. In another modification a choke is connected in circuit during rectifier operation and short-circuited during inverter operation. Means may be provided for altering the voltage and reversing the D.C. connections simultaneously.
