405,187. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.- (Singer Manufacturing Co. ; Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A.) July 3, 1933, No. 18772. [Class 112.] The invention relates to lock stitch rotary hook sewing machines and provides an unobstructed passage of the needle loop round the bobbin case for high speed operation. The invention is illustrated with respect to a two-bobbin feed-off-the-arm machine. The work arm 1 is closed by a cover plate and a throat plate 4 with feed slots. Co-operating with a pair of vertically reciprocating needles arranged abreast are a pair of vertical axis rotary hooks, each having a cup-shaped hook body, a beak 12 for engaging the needle loop, and a loop-discharging tail 13. A needle guard 14 is secured to the hook body. Each hook body has a bobbin carrier race and the bobbin carriers are retained by the flat member 22. The hooks rotate on vertical spindles driven through bevel gearing by a horizontal shaft. The hooks, as is usual, rotate twice for each complete reciprocation of the needle. The right hand bobbin carrier 21 has a rotation-restraining lug 30 which loosely enters a restraining notch 31 in the under side of the throat plate. The carrier also has a shoulder 32 intermittently engaged by a spring finger 46 carried by the finger 33 which is vibrated to initiate counterclockwise oscillation to the bobbin carrier to open the passage for the needle loop. The other bobbin carrier is provided with a similar opener device for the needle thread loop.
